TANGO

TANGO
Materials: cotton yarn Dimensions: 45 cm x 80 cm Technique: handwoven on a countermarch loom

Music has always been a big love and inspiration in my life. Like weaving, music to me is a catalyst for processing and experiencing. I try to involve it wherever i can.

I am intrigued by the similarities between music compositions and weaving patterns; both sheet music and weaving patterns have instructions on instruments, rhythm and melody and there are infinite interpretations possible by making the instructions on the sheet music or the weaving pattern your own.

In the exhibition Tang & Tango i presented my first juxtaposition of these two art forms by using the Tango notes of ‘Oblivion’ by Astor Piazzolla to determine my weave pattern.

Tango originated from the homesickness of migrants from all over the world. History tells the story of a cacophony of cultures from Europe, Africa and South America that have contributed to this music and dance style. A wonderful example of the beauty that can arise when we embrace each other's cultures.

“With this piece of tango music, I have determined the rhythm and pitch of the weave pattern. I invited the audience to weave their own melody with it.”
