MSLM
In 2006 i was asked by Showroom MAMA in Rotterdam to lead and curate a project about young (16-26 yr) Dutch Muslima Fashion .
We wanted to focus on the fashion of this group. From tradition to trendy, from the Middle East to here in the West.
Because the girls grow up in the Netherlands and/or are Dutch, a fashionable clash and union between East and West arises. Which results in new, interesting shapes and silhouettes for both Muslim women and non-Muslims.”
If fashion is the face of a society, than ours had changed quite a bit around the start of the 21st century. A group of young women, mostly second generation, Muslim and fashion-conscious, were becoming increasingly visible within The Netherlands.
It was important not to become an anthropological document or a Western vision on Muslim fashion, so we put together an editorial team of Muslim girls from various backgrounds. Together, we identified themes for the fashion publication and the exhibition.
